The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) has updated its standard revision timeline following feedback from global corporations. Businesses raised concerns regarding proposed Scope 2 reporting changes, particularly requirements for hourly renewable energy matching and strict geographical proximity rules.
In response, the organization is re-evaluating its guidance to ensure market flexibility while maintaining accounting integrity across voluntary climate reporting frameworks.
“Feedback from hundreds of organizations underscored that while carbon accounting needs greater accuracy, mandatory hourly matching places an undue administrative and financial burden on companies. We are reviewing the input to deliver a framework that balances climate integrity with operational feasibility,” said Alexander Farsan, Chair, Steering Committee, GHG Protocol.
“Imposing strict temporal matching and narrower grid boundaries risks slowing down corporate investment in clean energy projects rather than accelerating them. A phased implementation schedule and clear exemption pathways are essential to support businesses of all sizes,” said David R Rich, Director, GHG Protocol, World Resources Institute (WRI).
